Treasurer Kennedy and Rep. Jerry Luke LeBlanc Present Check to University President

BATON ROUGE, LA – Rep. Jerry Luke LeBlanc joined State Treasurer John Kennedy today in returning $28,600 in Unclaimed Property to Dr. Ray Authement, President of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The presentation was made at a 10:00 a.m. press conference at the UL Lafayette Alumni Center.

With the Unclaimed Property program, a university is just like a Louisiana citizen; if it has money that it hasn’t claimed, its our job to give it back, said Treasurer Kennedy. Thousands of businesses do not realize that they have Unclaimed Property with the state, so were hoping that our presentation today will get the word out on how they too can claim their money.

Unclaimed Property for a company or university includes any money in the normal ourse of business that has not been claimed including accounts payable, dormant bank accounts or dividend checks. UL Lafayettes $28,600 included utility deposits, tax refunds, money orders, vendor checks, royalty checks, expense checks and a savings account.

I would like to once again commend Treasurer Kennedy and his staff for operating this program in a professional and efficient manner, said Rep. LeBlanc. The presentation of this check to UL Lafayette illustrates the benefits not only to the taxpayers of the state but to state and local agencies as well. After all, it is their money.

This program is just one of many that exemplifies the state’s effort to do right by its citizens, said Dr. Authement. I want to thank Treasurer John Kennedy and Representative LeBlanc for giving back to the university and for supporting programs like the Unclaimed Property Program.
