BATON ROUGE, LA – The Louisiana Department of the Treasury held an Unclaimed Property event at Prien Lake Mall in Lake Charles this past weekend and returned $151,000 to area residents.

“We had claims ranging from a few dollars to a few thousand dollars,” said State Treasurer Ron Henson. “Our largest claim by far was $44,000 for a gentleman from Lake Charles.”

State Treasury employees travel to shopping malls, community centers and other venues all over the state in an attempt to locate Unclaimed Property owners. According to Treasurer Henson, between 800 to 1,000 area residents attended the Unclaimed Property event in Lake Charles.

The Treasury estimates that one in six individuals in Louisiana has Unclaimed Property, and the average refund is $900. Louisiana residents who were unable to attend Saturday’s Unclaimed Property Awareness Day can search for missing money online at www.latreasury.com or call the Treasury’s toll-free hotline at 1-888-925-4127 (Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
