State Treasurer John Kennedy Returns $14,000 to Owner

BATON ROUGE, LA – State Treasurer John Kennedy issued a check valued at $14,053 to a Hammond woman this week, marking the first unclaimed property refund to be made by the State Treasury.

The Unclaimed Property Division was transferred to the Department of the State Treasury on July 1, 2000, in accordance with legislation approved during the state’s first 2000 Special Session. The division formerly resided within the Department of Revenue.

We are pleased to be able to return this money to its rightful owner, said Kennedy. We anticipate many more checks to be presented in the days and months to come, as our office works hard to notify and educate people about the state’s unclaimed property program.

Kennedy, who served as the state’s Revenue Secretary prior to his election as State Treasurer, managed the Unclaimed Property Division for three years, returning more than $22 million to some 50,000 rightful owners or heirs. He said the state still holds more than $150 million in unclaimed property.

The Hammond woman, who asked not to be identified, said she located an old stock certificate in a desk drawer following the death of a family member. She asked a friend who worked for A.G. Edwards to help locate the stock. The friend followed a paper trail that led to the State of Louisiana. After some legal work which was needed to clarify the family members succession, the woman was eligible to receive the money.

Locating the money was a pleasant surprise, she said. My only wish is that the original owners would have known about the stock certificate and the state’s Unclaimed Property program in time to have enjoyed it.

Kennedy said people can discover whether or not the state is holding money for them by contacting the state’s Unclaimed Property Division. The division can be reached at The Department of the Treasury, Unclaimed Property Division, Post Office Box 91010, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 70821, or by calling toll-free at 1-888-925-4127, or in Baton Rouge at 225-219-9400.
