With $12 Million in Refunds, Department Has Already Outpaced Last Year By $800,000

BATON ROUGE, LA – The year-end numbers are not even in yet, but with $12 million in unclaimed property refunds, the State Treasury has already broken its all-time refund record by nearly $800,000, according to State Treasurer John Kennedy.

We have already exceeded $12 million dollars in refunds for a single fiscal year, and our previous record was around $11 million, said Treasurer Kennedy. Our unclaimed property employees work hard to keep the program in the public eye through awareness events and our annual publication of names in statewide newspapers. We have also made improvements to our website to make unclaimed property searches as quick and easy as possible.

The Treasury hosts unclaimed property awareness days every two or three months at shopping malls, community centers and conventions in all major areas of the state. It also operates a toll-free hotline for citizens to look for unclaimed property at 1-888-925-4127 and a website at www.latreasury.comwhere citizens can search for their money and file a claim for it online. This year to-date, the Treasury’s toll-free hotline has logged more than 70,000 calls, and its website has received 2.5 million visits and more than 23,000 emails.

Another reason we have had such a phenomenal response this year is because we have received national recognition for our unclaimed property program, said Treasurer Kennedy. To me, it doesn’t matter whether we are giving back $5 or $5,000. It is the principle that is important. Government requires us to pay our taxes on time and in the correct amount. Government should be held to the same standard when it has your money.

The Treasury’s unclaimed property database has information on roughly 500,000 people who are entitled to more than $218 million. For more information, visit the Unclaimed Property Division online at www.latreasury.com.
