State Treasury to Host Unclaimed Property Awareness Day in Metairie; Dateline NBC to Film Event

NEW ORLEANS Shopping at Metairie’s Lakeside Mall on Saturday, February 23, could make you rich and famous if you are one of thousands of Louisianians who has unclaimed property listed with the state, according to State Treasurer John Kennedy.

The Louisiana Department of the Treasury will be hosting a $202 million Unclaimed Property Awareness Day at Lakeside’s Center Court between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Dateline NBC will be at the mall to film the event for an upcoming news story.

Its an honor that our Unclaimed Property Division has been recognized by such a major national news program, said Treasurer Kennedy. We work hard to return this money, and I encourage those visiting the mall this weekend to check for their names on our computers. One in six people in Louisiana has lost money in the state, and the odds of finding unclaimed property while shopping this weekend are certainly much better than playing the lottery. Shoppers can instantly find out if they are one of 500,000 unclaimed property owners who are entitled to more than $202 million. Treasurer Kennedy and department representatives will be on hand to help anyone who finds unclaimed property to file a claim for the money on the spot.

For the past few years, the Treasury has traveled to shopping malls across the state to give back $1,274,386 in unclaimed money to its rightful owners. This total includes $56,837 in Alexandria, $45,919 in Baton Rouge, $284,652 in Lafayette, $31,929 in Lake Charles, $240,022 in Shreveport, $28,845 in Slidell, and $586,182 in New Orleans. Government requires us to pay our taxes promptly and in the correct amount, said Treasurer Kennedy. Shouldn’t government be held to the same standard when it has your money?

Lakeside Mall is located at 3301 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Metairie. Residents who are unable to make it to the mall on Saturday can search for unclaimed property online at www.latreasury.comor call toll-free (nationwide) 1-888-925-4127.
