Treasurer Kennedy and Sen. Jones Return "Hidden Treasure" to University

BATON ROUGE, LA – Louisiana Tech University became the fourth college in the state to receive thousands of dollars in Unclaimed Property from the Louisiana Department of the Treasury and the State Legislature, according to State Treasurer John Kennedy.

Sen. Bill Jones and Treasurer Kennedy returned $2,200 to Tech as part of the state’s continued effort to increase businesses and organizations awareness about the Unclaimed Property program. Techs hidden treasure came from bank accounts, money orders, dividends, miscellaneous checks, court deposits, official checks, vendor checks, liquidation funds, refunds, a savings account, checking account and utility deposit.

With the Unclaimed Property Program, a university is just like a Louisiana citizen; if it has money that it hasn’t claimed, its our job to give it back, said Treasurer Kennedy. Thousands of businesses do not realize that they have Unclaimed Property with the state, so were working to get the word out on how they too can claim their money.

Unclaimed Property for a company, organization or university includes any money in the normal course of business that has not been claimed including accounts payable, dormant bank accounts or dividend checks. When organizations have Unclaimed Property listed with the state, it is through no fault of their own; many do not even realize it is out there to begin with.

I hope that this check to Louisiana Tech will increase awareness about the Unclaimed Property Program in the northern part of the state, said Sen. Jones. The Legislature will continue to work with Treasurer Kennedy to give all Louisiana citizens and businesses their money back.

The Louisiana Department of the Treasury and the Legislature have already returned $28,600 to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, $27,000 to Louisiana State University and $43,000 to Southern University this year. Tulane University is also scheduled to receive $27,500 in the near future.
