Department is Holding $184 Million in Hidden Treasure... Some of It May Be Yours

SHREVEPORT, LA – Do you have hidden treasure in Louisiana? This weekend, Shreveport/Bossier City area shoppers will have the chance to find out. On Saturday, March 31, the Louisiana Department of the Treasury and Mall St. Vincent will host an Unclaimed Property Awareness Day from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

One in six people in Louisiana has lost money in the state, and the odds of finding Unclaimed Property while shopping this weekend are certainly much better than playing the lottery, said State Treasurer John Kennedy.

Shoppers can instantly find out if they are among 500,000 Unclaimed Property owners who are entitled to more than $184 million. Treasurer Kennedy and department representatives will be on-hand to help anyone who finds Unclaimed Property to file a claim for the money on the spot.

In the past few years, the department has traveled to shopping malls across the state to give back $1,134,249 in unclaimed money to its rightful owners. This total includes $25,783 in Alexandria, $32,765 in Baton Rouge, $28,845 in Slidell, $284,652 in Lafayette, $176,022 in Shreveport and $586,182 in New Orleans.

If you’re planning to visit the Mall St. Vincent this weekend, take a moment to stop and check your name on our computers, said Treasurer Kennedy. We are here to help you find your money, and we will do so for no charge.
