Treasurer Kennedy Expands State Agency Credit Card Options to Better Serve Customers

BATON ROUGE. LA – State agencies and departments will now be able to accept American Express credit cards for payments of all types of obligations, according to State Treasurer John Kennedy.

Were trying to make it as easy as possible for taxpayers and citizens to pay their bills on time, said Treasurer Kennedy. The Treasury already accepts Visa and MasterCard for financial transactions, and adding American Express gives people an additional payment option.

Treasurer Kennedy says there are several advantages to government acceptance of credit cards including a reduction in NSF checks. Credit cards also provide agencies with the convenience of conducting financial business on the Internet.

Credit cards have worked well for government agencies and are especially beneficial for citizens, said Treasurer Kennedy. They provide Louisiana residents with an alternative and convenient way to pay for state services.

Any state agency, board, commission or department may accept credit cards by signing an Agency Participation Agreement. To obtain an agreement, or if an agency already accepts American Express Cards under separate legislative authorization, contact Jim Blankinship at the Louisiana Department of the Treasury at (225) 342-0049.

The Louisiana Department of the Treasury is also planning to add the Discover Card as an additional choice for state agency payments sometime in the near future.
