When Louisiana citizens forget to get utility deposits back, cash their final paychecks or collect stocks and dividends, the Louisiana Department of the Treasurys Unclaimed Property Division helps them claim their money. Did you know that companies, non-profit groups, and local and state governments can also have hidden treasure in Louisiana and can claim it just like individuals do?

The Louisiana Department of the Treasury has returned $63 million in Unclaimed Property since the program began, and has $184 million that still needs to be claimed. Roughly10 percent of this amount belongs to businesses and other organizations across the state.

Unclaimed Property for a company, organization or unit of government includes any money in the normal course of business that has not been claimed including accounts payable, dormant bank accounts or dividend checks. One important thing to remember is that when organizations have Unclaimed Property listed with the state, its through no fault of their own. Many do not even realize its out there to begin with.

The Louisiana Department of the Treasury is working to change that, however. In an effort to increase businesses and organizations awareness about the program, the Treasury has been working with the Legislature to present Unclaimed Property checks to universities across the state. Our goal is to get the word out that with our Unclaimed Property program, a company is just like a Louisiana citizen; if it has money that it has not claimed, it is our job to give it back.
