Treasurer Kennedy Says Department Will Continue Aggressive Drive To Return Money

BATON ROUGE, LA – The Louisiana Department of the Treasury returned $105,000 to New Orleans area residents at an Unclaimed Property Awareness Day held at Lakeside Mall in Metairie on Saturday, February 3, according to State Treasurer John Kennedy.

“It was an extraordinary success, said Treasurer Kennedy. We returned $105,000 in just five hours and had claims ranging from as little as $50 to as much as $22,000.

Treasurer Kennedy and department representatives were on-hand to help thousands of citizens look for Unclaimed Property in the State Treasury’s computerized database. New Orleans residents instantly found out if they were among 500,000 Unclaimed Property owners entitled to more than $182 million and were able to file a claim for their money on the spot.

In the past few years, the department has traveled to shopping malls across the state to give back more than $1,029,249 in unclaimed money to its rightful owners. This total includes more than $25,783 in Alexandria, $32,765 in Baton Rouge, $28,845 in Slidell, $284,652 in Lafayette, $176,022 in Shreveport and $586,182 in New Orleans.
